JC BIOLOGY SCIENCE INVESTIGATION
BONDING
Remember the 'Iodine Snake' in heterogenis catalysis. Well, be blown away by this snake!! Also Effects of 'breathing Helium' and creating smoke rings...

Radioactivity
Detection and penetrating power – of alpha, beta and gamma radiation.
Testing solubility in different solvents of ionic and covalent substances
POLARITY TEST
Use of charged plastic rod
The charged plastic rod attracts any liquid which is polar. How do you know if a liquid is polar? What would happen if a non-polar liquid like cyclohexane was used?
Burning Ethyne results in a violent reaction with a lot of black soot, much to the delight of 5th year students
Evidence for the Intermediate Compound Theory
(Also an example of Homogenous Catalysis)
This demonstration shows the oxidation of potassium sodium tartrate by hydrogen peroxide, catalysed by cobalt chloride. The addition of the cobalt (II) salt (pink) leads to the formation of an intermediate green, oxidation occurs and when reaction is finished the pink colour returns showing the catalyst is not used up in the reaction.
